Republicans took control of the State House in 1999 for the first time ever. In 2001, the GOP substantially increased its margin statewide; and the party retained a strong edge in both 2003 and 2005. As of Jan. 2006, the breakdown is 58 Republicans, 40 Democrats and 3 independents (2 of whom caucus with the GOP).
