Campaign HQ:
All 40 seats in the Virginia State Senate were up for election in 2011. Republicans picked up 2 seats for a 20-20 tie, and Lt. Gov. Bolling (R) will provide the deciding vote.. The GOP controlled the Senate Senate from 1999-2007, providing some much-needed balance to Democrat Govs. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine. But Democrats won control in 2007, and they blocked parts of Gov. Bob McDonnell's forward-looking agenda. The Senate breakdown in early 2011 was 18 R and 22 D; it will now be 20 R and 20 D.
REDISTRICTING: Many Senate district boundaries have been changed substantially, as a result of legislative redistricting in April 2011. Some candidates have been moved into new districts. Voters should also check carefully to find out what district they'll be voting in this year. Our Senate district pages were updated in early May, to reflect the new lines. (Information on previous district configurations is available here.) Next Senate elections: Nov. 2015.
