Fairfax City

mapThe City of Fairfax is a small independent city, located in the geographic center of populous Fairfax County. The city's Old Town area dates back to Colonial Days. Fairfax City is also home to the main campus of George Mason University.

Prior to 1961, Fairfax was officially a "town", which was part of Fairfax County and served as the home of the county government. In 1961, the community was incorporated as an independent city. Today, Fairfax City and Fairfax County are separate governmental units, although some county offices are still located within the city limits. Fairfax City has its own mayor, council, police, local services and taxing authority.
