Prior to 1961, Fairfax was officially a "town", which was part of Fairfax County and served as the home of the county government. In 1961, the community was incorporated as an independent city. Today, Fairfax City and Fairfax County are separate governmental units, although some county offices are still located within the city limits. Fairfax City has its own mayor, council, police, local services and taxing authority. NOTE: Many "Fairfax, VA" mailing addresses are actually in Fairfax County, not Fairfax City. Population: 21,000 (per 2000 census); 24,700 (per 2009 estimate - see details).
